Lawyers develop along a different educational path to other C-suite colleagues. Most lack formal business qualifications and leadership training (if any) is given later in their careers and often on an ‘as needed’ basis. Although in house lawyers are usually more developed in this respect than their private practice cousins, there remains an opportunity for GCs to develop themselves in this further. They can also nurture their teams and grow future leaders in a more balanced and relevant way than has been seen previously. There are increasing opportunities for GCs to oversee diverse portfolios beyond just the legal function. Accompanied by the latest leadership and management techniques they will be better able to move beyond their traditional legal roles and encourage their senior GC team members to do the same. There has never been such an exciting time for GCs to branch out and help shape the organisations they serve and to move further into their business in a similar way that other functional leaders have done in the past.
